World Slalom Series Statistics 2007-2012

Skater numbers and scoring method

The WSSA Rankings serve slalom skaters well as a measure of their skills. The main purpose of this work is an attempt to make a wider look at the global picture - the Ranking of entire countries.

In 2007-2012 sportsmen were ranked by sum of 4 best points gained during a year. The points strictly depend on skater's place and competition level. The tables are published on the special WSS page. It's obvious that earning high rank demands visiting high level events ("2c" at least) to get good points even for a low place. Just taking part in it usually gives more points than winning "grey" or "1c" contest! It sets for ambitious slalomers aiming for a Ranking top not only an athletic task but a financial one as well. They have to travel abroad or they won't get decent points otherwise. Therefore Ranking of a country consists not only from blazing wins and proud podiums of its sponsored sportsmen which are few but also from efforts of enthusiastic amateurs and novices spending their own resourses to travel afar for the sake of the favorite sport. They are a base producing new high level atletes. The more both pros and amateurs the higher country level among other countries. With the growth of WSS popularity its events take place in distant regions of the world. Traveling, for example, from South America to European or Asian mega-contests is very expensive. The only solution for local skaters is to organize competitions at homeland which is certainly an evidence of developing sport.

The Rankings give us 2 most important factors to be researched: country level, counted as a sum of its athletes strength, and their number. "Strength" is evaluated by simple formula: the first 10 Ranking places weigh 10 points each, all others 100/place.

Ranking place score

This relation is taken by following reasons. The sportsmen strength distribution in the Rankings is best described by y=a/x. Other dependances are too steep or too low. The constant a is the average number of active sportsmen, which successfully take part in several moderate or high level competitions. Their contribution to their home country level is considered to be more than 1. Until 2010 there were 4 competition levels and activity condition was successful participation in "1c" and higher events. 200 (4 wins by 50 points) was maximum for those who visited only "grey" local contests. In 2010-2012 this condition was raised to 400 points (4 wins by 100) due to the change in levels. Most of former would be "grey" events became "1c" and activity was defined by participation in "2c" and higher. It was impossible to gain more than 400 points in the Rankings without them.

Active slalomers number

The chart above shows the number of active slalomers by the described criteria in all 4 disciplines. It's not difficult to make its own weight function for each of them but there's no such need: not only number of skaters changes but the Ranking system itself and therefore the criteria of activity. For example, in 2010 one level was added, from 2013 5 best scores are summed for Freestyle instead of 4. Adding another level or separating Battle and Classics in Freestyle Ranking are possible in the years ahead. And we can't compare scores and points from different disciplines anyway. Their average line of active skaters is pretty close to 100 which also satisfies our natural appeal to round numbers. Thus 100 was taken as an universal base number.

The 1st 10 places of Rankings are very close to each other in skaters' skills (given enough participants in total, of course), but their points for places differs dramatically - 100, 50, 33 and so on. Their change of places, even small would shake the resulting marks greatly. Because of that, top-10 places were levelled on 10 points.

Total number of skaters

The number of skaters grew year by year. It's obvious that saturation is not yet reached and further growth is expected. The men's numbers doubled and women's even tripled during the examined period. All ups and downs are considered in yearly reports. At the end of 2012 Speed and Freestyle slalomers became very close in numbers for men and for women. The rising popularity of slalom in the world is beyond any doubts. It's really interesting what changes await us in the future.

Men Freestyle Slalom

10 countries for the first pair of charts are selected by the situation at the end of 2012. To be exact, it's top-10 by their average levels in 2012. Levels are calculated with the described earlier method.

Country levels in Men Freestyle Slalom

The leading countries are apparently permanent: China, France, Russia. Not far from them South Korea, Spain, Poland, Italy, rising Thailand and Argentina. Germany year by year was losing points due to decreasing level and number of skaters. It stayed in top-10 only by Martin Sloboda's efforts. Catching eye ups and drops and common tendencies are in the detailed yearly reports. The next chart shows number of skaters, provided level for their countries.

Number of skaters in Men Freestyle

Despite huge surges and ebbs China had got the most impressive army of slalomers. Normally 40-50 was good number for a country and not only leading countries could provide so many. Thailand and Argentina took by the numbers which can later possibly produce several top-class athletes.

And it would be right thing to mention 10 more countries from global top-20.

Other top-20 countries

Singapore and Great Britain stood out clearly and they indeed belonged to top-10 in the past years, but their presence in the Ranking almost faded in the end. We're glad to see (though slow) growth of Ukraine and Belarus.

Number of skaters in other top-20 countries

In 2008-2012 16 countries were in top-10 places of our Country Ranking.

Top-10 countries in 2008-2012

On this diagram the first line, for example, means that on the 1st place of this Country Ranking in Men Freestyle Slalom 5 months was Russia, 9 - France and 46 - China. Thus by country place sums we can finally rank countries for their 5-year achievements. This method seems better than others: our country scoring can't be correctly used to compare countries in different time and it's not good to apply one more formula to evaluate country place (like we already did for skaters). Let's not forget that WSSA Rankings 2008 carry results from 2007, but still we've got only 5 years of Rankings. Before joining this Country Ranking countries are considered to be on the next after the last place.

Top-10 countries by their place sum in 2008-2012

  1. China (105)
  2. France (135)
  3. Russia (164)
  4. South Korea (273)

  1. Italy (402)
  2. Spain (452)
  3. Singapore (555)
  4. Poland (624)
  5. Great Britain (665)

We must not leave without mention the best sportsmen which earned their top-10 places in challenging struggle. Especially with the leveling of their scores on 10 points and they should be distinct from each other. The heroes of slalom have now their unleveled points (1 place 100, 2nd - 50, 3rd - 33.33 and so on) to see who was the best of the best in the period under consideration. These points are to be multiplied on the number of months sportsmen took certain place. Then they are ranked by total sums of points.

The names of the best slalomers was and still are famous if not legendary. Kim Sung Jin (South Korea) became an example for humdreds of people in the whole world. Smooth movements on high speed, following the music, many choreografic features and, of course, the highest technical level - all that made him the Ranking Leader for 2 years! The second goes slalom veteran Igor Cheremetieff (France) with his unique “electrocuted” style nobody can replicate. And it was Igor who made wheeling footgun so popular and widely spread. The 3rd hero is Martin Sloboda (Germany) also very famous for his longest and complex wheelings. 38 sportsmen visited top-10 during 5 years. The complete list of heroes is in the file on the title page.

From Jan 2008 to Dec 2012 only 60 skaters kept their participation in the Ranking. It's 1,7% of all their number. 18 of them were in top-10.

Country levels in Men Speed Slalom

Speed Slalom among men have only 3 leading countries: France, Italy and China. China suffered great waves up and down, and wasn't a steady leader, but leader nevertheless. Germany gave up its high positions with less and less participants. Russia held fast between the leaders and other countries. Poland and Argentine showed growing interest to this discipline. Taiwan and South Korea were near the bottom. The next chart shows number of skaters, provided level for their countries.

And it would be right thing to mention 10 more countries from global top-20.

Other top-20 countries

As in Freestyle Singapore and Great Britain showed some activity then faded away. Other countries had just occasional peaks of interest. Will there be something new after such peaks in the end of 2012 in Malaysia, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Senegal?

Number of skaters in other top-20 countries

In 2008-2012 16 countries were in top-10. One of them, Mauritius, is absent on the charts. This exotic country entered the Ranking only because of a single contest in 2008, when there were much less countries in Speed Slalom.

10 countries for the first pair of charts are selected by the situation at the end of 2012. To be exact, it's top-10 by their average levels in 2012. Levels are calculated with the described earlier method.

Country levels in Women Freestyle Slalom

The leading countries are the same: Russia, China, Italy, France and plus Poland. Poland year by year went up until it took its place among leaders. Ukraine is between them and other countries, whose slalom girls didn't travel abroad to compete, like Taiwan, Argentine, Thailand.

And it would be right thing to mention 10 more countries from global top-20.

The other top-20 countries

The loss of interest to freestyle slalom in Germany may soon make it to leave from top-10 charts, as happened with South Korea, Spain and Singapore.

The number of skaters in the other top-20 countries

In 2008-2012 16 countries were in top-10 of our Country Ranking.

The names of the best slalomers were widely known. Chloé Seyrès (FRA) was always special with her strong “rock-n-roll” style as she called it. Chen Chen (CHN) – bright classic Asian style slalomer with complex tricks and transitions complemented by good choreography and following music. Femininely smooth and accurate programs of Polina Semenova (RUS) even without high-end tricks were always admired by judges and public. The third place also took Maryna Boiko (UKR) who had her own distinct style – more technical, sometimes uneven, but mostly interesting and with good following the music. The best sportswomen presented very different styles of slaloming. During 5 years 42 girls visited the top-10 lines of the Freesyle WSSA Ranking. The complete list of heroes is in the file on the title page.

From January 2008 to December 2012 only 24 sportswomen kept their presence in the Ranking, which is 1,8% of all number. 7 of them were in the top-10.

Women Speed Slalom

10 countries for the first pair of charts are selected by the situation at the end of 2012. To be exact, it's top-10 by their average levels in 2012. Levels are calculated with the described earlier method.

Country levels in Women Speed Slalom

Well, we can see the same obsessed with speed slalom countries: France and Italy. China's level leaped up and down with its skater number fluctuation. Poland progressed well but it's a long way up to leaders. Russia is close and was left behind by Poland in the middle of 2011. The next chart shows number of skaters, provided level for their countries.

And it would be right thing to mention 10 more countries from global top-20.

Other top-20 countries

It was time when Singapore and South Korea had some meaning in Women Speed Slalom, but then the interest went down and there are just few sportswomen left in those countries.

Number of skaters in other top-20 countries

In 2008-2012 16 countries were in this Country Ranking's top-9. All of them are shown on the charts. We had to take top-9 instead of usual top-10 as there were only 9 countries in Jan 2008 Women Speed Slalom Ranking. Other countries are considered to be on 10th place.
